How long in a separation?

Is a separation something that has to last so long, that he and she have enough of the legalities, and are looking for any meassure to shorten it?
Why defunct marriages have to pretend that there's a chance, while none exists?

Surely, our legislators should be able to see that in today's fast paced world, everybody is running out of time.
Husbands and wifes want to grab their next "perfect" chances, and run towards the eternal bliss...
If one exists.

But, somehow such a point of view seems to be lacking. There are many more ingredients to one's happiness. And each of them has to be accounted for, before securing the "freedom".
